Ketchum’s Barri Rafferty Receives Milestones in Mentoring Award
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2015 – Barri Rafferty, senior partner and CEO of Ketchum North America, was honored with the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations’ 2015 Milestones in Mentoring Agency Award. The award recognizes those who have been outstanding mentors at a public relations agency.
“The roster of past ‘Milestones in Mentoring’ award recipients is a list of PR luminaries, and it’s an incredible honor to be included among this year’s recipients,” said Rafferty. “In receiving this award it made me consider what role we all play in investing in the next generation of our industry, and I encourage everyone to be a mentor but also to be mentored.”
Committed to developing up-and-coming talent, Rafferty is particularly interested in women’s leadership. She is a member of the governing body of OmniWomen, Omnicom’s Leading Women’s Network, for which she holds quarterly panel discussions featuring prominent women within the marketing and communications industry who share their own experiences and offer advice to women. This effort began at Ketchum, when Rafferty instituted regular panels on topics like “Navigating Balance” and “Leave the Apologies Behind.” She also has led courses as part of Ketchum University, Ketchum’s award-winning employee learning and development program, including “Turning Clients into Enthusiastic Fans” and “Ethical Decision-making.”
“My role as a mentor is first and foremost to help others achieve their career aspirations,” Rafferty said. “As a female CEO, I hear from young women all the time who are looking for a woman leader to be a mentor. The challenge for me is that I know I cannot have meaningful mentoring relationships with more than a handful of people at a time, so I look for other ways to help the number of young women looking for career guidance.”
Currently, Rafferty leads Ketchum’s nine offices in North America as well as Ketchum Digital and Ketchum Sports & Entertainment. In addition, she oversees Ketchum’s complementary businesses, including Access Communications and Harrison & Shriftman. She also is part of Ketchum’s eight-member Worldwide Executive Committee, which focuses on guiding the strategy, client service and performance of the agency.
Outside of Ketchum, Rafferty participates in a number of groups, such as the sustainability taskforce for the World Economic Forum and the Arthur W. Page Society’s Page Up program. Rafferty also sits on the board of StepUp, an organization with the mission of empowering girls from under-resourced communities to become confident, college-bound and career focused. She also is active in the Public Relations Society of America’s New York Chapter and is a former chapter president. In addition, she is a capstone adviser and former adjunct professor in the master’s program in public relations at New York University, as well as an advisory member of the branding and integrated communications program for the City College of New York.
